Minister for Tertiary Education and Transport Steven Joyce and Labour Department representatives personally congratulated Fletcher Construction Company workers on boosting their skills with literacy training last week.
A graduation ceremony was held at Auckland’s Victoria Park Tunnel on 30 November. The tunnel project is a major transport improvement project due for completion by Fletcher in 2012.
In his speech, the Minister said: “We’re here to discuss two things I am particularly passionate about – adult literacy and improving Auckland’s transport network, specifically through the construction of the Victoria Park Tunnel. They’re both important to ensuring our economy grows faster and we become more prosperous as a nation.”
“But really today is about you, and your success. I congratulate you all on your achievements,” he said.
Twenty-nine carpenters, labourers, supervisors, crane operators, leading hands and team leaders graduated from the BOOST programme.
Four graduates - Ryan Munro, Richard Summerville, Apelu Saulo and Rodney Mafileo - talked to the Department about what it’s meant to them personally and professionally.
BOOST is a 12-week, in-house programme currently being delivered by Literacy Aotearoa. The programme teaches basic reading, writing, maths and communication. It started in 2007.
