Funding assistance

Funding assistance

The New Zealand Government provides assistance and different types of funding for certain programmes and training providers. The funding is limited so it won’t be available in all cases, but it may be a helpful start for some businesses.

Review what funding is available:

Funding direct to employers

If you plan to train a minimum of 50 employees over a 12-month period and meet certain other criteria, you can apply to the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) for funding from the Workplace Literacy Fund.

The TEC will provide advice and guidance to help you develop a long-term sustainable programme.

For more information about applying for funding directly, see the Tertiary Education Commission website. Remember it may take some months to pull your application information together, so start planning early.

Please note there is only a fixed level of funding available each year. Keep an eye on the What's new? page to see when the next round opens, or contact the TEC direct.

Funding through workplace literacy training providers

Selected training providers have been allocated funding from the TEC's Workplace Literacy Fund to develop programmes customised to meet your business needs.

These providers may be able to develop your programme at no, or minimal, cost. They will manage the programme and provide qualified trainers. See the list of workplace literacy providers.

Funding through Industry Training Organisations (ITOs)

ITOs can identify workplace literacy training needs for your organisation within the context of your industry. Some ITOs are involved in TEC-funded projects. Through these projects, your ITO could offer embedded literacy and numeracy training which forms part of your industry’s vocational qualifications.

Funding through Work and Income

Work and Income has workplace training funding for businesses taking people off unemployment. A percentage of this funding is for literacy and numeracy training. Find out how to support your employees with help from Work and Income.
