How to make it happen

Where to start to improve skills in your business

Yes, you can improve the reading, maths and communication skills in your workplace. And help is available.

You can develop your own training in-house, with help from the information and tools provided on this website. Or you can use a training provider.  Your Industry Training Organisation (ITO) can provide advice and support throughout the process.

Working with their ITOs and own trainers or contracted training providers, a range of employers have developed achievable, business-focused programmes, and are now implementing them – and seeing the results.

Training to improve core skills can be integrated with other workplace training. Or it can be a stand-alone programme. It depends entirely on what works for your business and where you’re at.

Initial steps

To determine what’s best for your business, consider these initial steps:
  1. If you haven’t used it already, determine your broad needs with the:
  1. Obtain internal support from direct supervisors, other managers and key stakeholders such as your employee representatives
  1. Carry out a needs analysis specific to your business. Your ITO can help scope your needs. The analysis can be done internally if you have a trainer or contact a training provider for help.
