Overview of key steps

At a glance, here is the process to follow to improve the core skills of your employees:

  1. Assess the need in your workplace
    You’ll need to identify how the issue affects your business. Some employees may need help with reading, maths and communication. With other employees, you may need to address only one or two aspects.

  2. Know where you started
    Measuring your training enables you to make adjustments if needed, and determine the return on your investment. But first you need to set benchmarks so you know where you started. It’s too late to measure that once you’ve begun training.

  3. Gain support and approval
    Experience shows you’ll achieve better results when you gain support from senior management, supervisors and stakeholders such as employee representatives, from the outset, before you embark on any training.

  1. Consider the options
    Some businesses prefer to use training providers. Others develop their own training. It can be a stand-alone programme or integrated with other workplace training. Or, if a training programme isn’t right for you, consider other steps you can take.
