Spotless - employee case study

Falesoa Alaifaiva, Kitchen Specialist (Milk Room)

In 2010, Australasian service provider, Spotless, ran a 20-week workplace literacy training course for hospital employees in Wellington.

For 2 hours a week, employees received one-on-one tutoring with a professional workplace literacy tutor in company time.

The course, called Stepping Stones, covered a wide range of subjects such as reading, writing, listening, speaking, maths, customer service, communication, health and safety and teamwork.

In the Spotless case study we talk to seven employees based in Wellington Hospital about what Stepping Stones has meant to them.

Accor Hotels - employer case study

Accor Hotels logo Accor Hotels (Accor) is an international hotel company with more than 1,500 New Zealand-based employees.

Nearly 40 percent of employees - from kitchen hands to managers - speak English as a second language.

Accor managers found poor literacy and numeracy skills were an issue in the hotel group, particularly among migrant employees. They also found literacy issues had an impact on the company’s bottom line and overall performance.

Accor started out small with a year-long pilot programme for 20 Auckland-based employees in August 2010.

The pilot showed literacy training could address these issues, while at the same time improve employee engagement and confidence.

It also gave managers the information and experience they needed to develop a long-term, sustainable approach to workplace literacy training.
