Manukau logistics company receives top Pacific employer award
Cardinal Logistics from Manukau received the Pacific Employer/Workplace award at the recent 2010 MIT Pacific Business Awards in Auckland.
The Department of Labour sponsored the category which recognises companies which are proactively developing the capability and advancement of Pacific people in the New Zealand workforce.
The winners were chosen by a panel of five judges appointed by the Pacific Business Trust and were judged on a number of factors such as strategy and planning, business results and systems, processes and controls.
Twelve nominations were received for the Employer/Workplace category.
“The majority of Cardinal Logistics’ 120 employees are from the Pacific Islands and have English as a second language. We were delighted to see such a strong commitment to training their staff,” says the Department’s Acting Group Manager of Information and Promotion Deborah Kempson.
“At the end of 2008 the company worked with Workbase, specialists in workplace training and development, to administer a communication and numeracy programme for their employees. One of the valuable lessons from the Cardinal Logistics programme was that they called this programme a communication training course to make it less daunting to the staff. This significantly increased staff uptake.
“They also worked with Tradestaff to help their employees gain a NZQA qualification in warehousing and distribution.”
